We sat down with designer and founder of holi organic wear, Kelly du Toit to talk fashion, sustainability, and health.
What’s your favourite way to take adashiko?
I like to make it into little jellies with gelatine – I use frozen raspberries, lemon rind, and lemon juice. They’re like little sweets and the kids love them too.
What benefits have you noticed since taking adashiko?
My hair is really lush and thick, and my skin is consistently good. I feel like it hydrates and plumps up my skin from the inside out.
You’re a busy working mum and entrepreneur. Aside from adashiko, what else do you do to maintain energy and a healthy lifestyle?
Through my personal journey to self-care, I have learnt that health is about creating balance and taking care of the mind, body, and soul as a whole. I am a fan of yoga and meditation alongside a good diet comprised mostly of whole foods. I’m also a fan of a glass of bubbles with the girls from time to time – it all comes back to balance!
What inspired you to start your own clothing line?
I was looking for sustainable clothing that was stylish yet affordable, and I couldn’t find anything. I decided I had to create my own, and holi was born. Holi was built on the ideals of ethics, and classic clothing that is designed to be worn and worn and worn. I craft all my pieces out of natural fabric – organic where possible – which is sustainable sourced and then manufactured right here in Hawke’s Bay.
How can women be more sustainable when it comes to their wardrobe choices?
We should definitely not be buying as much as we do. Fast fashion is tempting but has a huge environmental and ethical impact; I prefer to buy less and but quality, and I hope that more women start to adopt this method of shopping. Where possible I try to support NZ-made brands.
I also use the Good On You Ethical Fashion app which details the way brands treat their workers and the environment. It’s pretty revealing. Another tip is to shop your own wardrobe: what could you add into your wardrobe that would work with your existing pieces?
You’re known for your styling expertise. What are some key items you believe every woman should have in her wardrobe?
A really decent knit (I love my holi Good Knits), a good coat, a decent pair of leather boots. You can’t go wrong with a well-cut pair of jeans – to get the perfect fit don’t be afraid to take them to a tailor to add darts or adjust the leg length or width.
What’s your go-to winter outfit to look stylish with minimal effort?
At the moment it’s a black merino top tucked into black high-waisted cigarette pants, topped with a linen vest and a Kow-tow scarf. I’m loving my black Doc Martin boots this winter too.
